Probably the most important discovery of man is fire! With fire we are able to cook meat which in turn helped our body better break down the food we ate. And since our bodies became less concerned with breaking down the hard meat and our metabolism improved, our brains the began to grow larger and gave us the level of intelligence we have today. This is all thanks to fire and the ability to cook.
Thanks to the rise survival shows on TV, more and more people are getting drawn in to being outdoorsmen and even more are being bitten by the survival bug. Some even take things to the next level by being preppers.
Personally, I don't agree that the world as we know it is coming to an end, but I whole heartedly support enhancing one's skills, specially survival skills. We all know that prevention is better than cure, and being prepared is WAY better than being unprepared. Just imagine that if you happen to get stranded and lost during a vacation to an exotic place, basic survival skills will help you to stay alive and sane.
Going back to fire, of course a lighter or a match would come is an the primary tool for making fire. This is correct but it is recommended that you bring along a flint or fire starter as well. In the unlikely event that the matches you have get wet or the lighter gets broken, a flint will by the next best thing. Nowadays, buying a flint or a magnesium fire starter is relatively easy, there are a lot of sellers online and in shops. With the growing number of survivalists, we will definitely see an increase in survival merchandise in the near future. I, myself just bought a magnesium fire starter and it is relatively easy to use. I tried creating a fire in my backyard and I was able to do it. I'll definitely bring it during my next hike and try building a fire in the wild.
